Aliens..??
There have been many movies that have fantasised the concepts of alien existence. One such brilliantly made movie is District 9. The animations in the movie does not look animated at all! (Animation is probably is one such profession where it looks best when it achieves its exact opposite). Kudos to the entire team of District 9.
What particularly drew my mind in the entire movie is the relationship between response and stimulus. I am reminded of a saying.." If men were triangles, God would also be a triangle". In other words, man conceptualises things the way he sees himself. It has been very recently that man has begun to imagine different shapes of living beings with equal, inferior or superior intelligence. It took human mind quite a few years to reach this stage.
However,till date, he has not been in a position to think beyond his emotions. This is exactly what caught my attention in the movie.The aliens in the movie look like prawns. What they spoke was not comprehensible. But the feelings they emoted were no different from the humans. They tore the humans apart for their food whenever they could. After all, it is question of survival even in them.
There was an alien kid, who looked really ugly... prawns never look good, do they? But when the lead role human entered the alien home, he spoke to the kid with a smile and offered to play hide and seek with that alien kid. That kid agreed to his suggestion immediately. It pestered its father to take him back home. It asked innocent questions like, "How many moons does this planet have? Does it have only one moon?". Well, no matter how scary the kid looked, it looked cute to me at that time. I guess its that basic innocence that is seen in the human kids that was seen here. The director has conceived technology on a completely new level, bio chemistry beyond the existing lines
I was infact, very proud to see such human emotions being retained in the aliens. Man has only learnt to think beyond himself externally but within he cannot think anything beyond his emotions. May be a day would come in the next hundred years where man would be able to attribute completely a different set of emotions to the aliens and make them truly alien. But for today, the question remains how alien were the aliens in District 9?
